There are three kinds of dispersion exist in optical fiber-
1. Modal dispersion
2. Material dispersion
3. Waveguide dispersion

1. Modal dispersion : This occurs when the fiber carries multiple modes of the same frequency signal energy and different modes have different time delays during transmission.

2. Material dispersion : This occurs when the refractive index of the fiber core material is a function of frequency, the signal components of different frequency propagate along the fiber at different velocities. This causes dispersion.

3. Waveguide dispersion : In fiber, for signals carrying different frequencies in the same mode, dispersion occurs due to different group velocities during propagation.

You will be surprise that these three types of dispersion are called chromatic dispersion. Single mode optical fiber G.652 defines a zero dispersion wavelength range of 1300nm~1324nm and a maximum dispersion slope of 0.093ps/( the wavelength range of 1525~1575nm, the dispersion coefficient is approximately 20ps/( 

The single mode optical fiber G.653 defines a zero dispersion wavelength 1550nm and a dispersion slope of 0.085ps/( in the wavelength range of 1525~1575nm where the maximum dispersion coefficient is 3.5ps/(

The value of the dispersion coefficient of single mode optical fiber G.655 fiber should be within 0.1~6.0 ps/( in the range of 1530~1565nm.
