Fiber Optic Media Converter

Fiber Media Converter: It is also known as fiber transceivers or Ethernet media converters. Fiber media converter is a simple networking devices, it make possible to connect two different media types such as twisted pair such as Cat5 or Cat6 cable with fiber optic cabling. Media converter connect different types of network cabling and make possible to extend networks between buildings and over longer distances.

Media Converter Deployment 


Media converter deployment is based on a transparent service using media converters. Effectively, the carrier takes a signal and converts it to a different type of signal, without corrupted any data. Transparent service means that LAN sites are tied together by a media at both ends of the service, and it is not known whether or not Ethernet traffic is traveling 5 feet or 50 miles. Transparent service is only point-to-point.


Another way of working transparent LANs is Media Converters. A media Convert takes a electrical signal or optical signal and converts it into a long haul optical Signal. This allows 10BASE-X or 100BASE-X to travel miles.Gigabit Ethernet, however, optical can already benefited from media converters. Generally Gigabit Ethernet Available at 850nm or 1310nm - Both are considered short range wavelengths. A media converter can get 850nm or 1310nm and it can turn into 1550nm.

For the most part, 10BASE-X and 100BASE-X circuits are converted into optical signals.For long haul transport. Often Gigabit Ethernet is converted from 850nm or 1310nm to a 1550nm signal.

There are so many media converter available in the market.But while taking media converter, some precautions have to be kept.Media converter should not be taken without information. Most Media Converter manufacturers do not mention their MTBF’s.But some media converter are reliable in the market. Many media converter manufacturer mention the high MTBF rates on the hardware. you have to check carefully.

Suppose that if you choose a low-end Media Converter, the end to end connection on your network will always appear as if it is up and running, even though the fiber connection may be broken or disconnected. Some media converters have microcontroller indicators on the device which continuous provide the warning about the error detection and recovery by continuously monitoring the status of the links connected to its transceiver ports. If there is any fault or break in the link, both end devices become aware and react accordingly.


It is my personal advice to you that choose a fiber optic media converter with high MTBF rates. Choose a optical fiber converter which manufacturer provide the technical engineer for the installation,you have to speak before purchase the optical fiber converter. Make sure you choose the right product.
